ShowStopper of the Week: John Mayer!

According to Look to the Stars, John Mayer became a construction hand in Shreveport, LA on Tuesday to help build homes for military veterans and their families.

The homes were made possible through the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which is “dedicated to ensuring injured service members, veterans and their families are thriving long after they return home,” according to their website remind.org.

Mayer put his all into helping with the painting process. We love John in his suit and tie, but he looks even better when he’s lending a helping hand! To learn more about the Bob Woodruff Foundation, click here.

She Should Have Used ShowStoppers!

Lena Dunham stepped out in a gold frock for the Time 100 gala held last Tuesday (April 23rd) in New York City. Although the Saint Laurent dress looked striking and Dunham was all smiles, the “Girls” actress and creator showed a bit too much chest at one point. Dunham, who made the top 100 list, could have used ShowStoppers to keep her dress firmly in place since ShowStoppers can stick straight to skin. Congrats Lena! But watch out for wardrobe malfunctions!

Womentrepreneur Wednesday: Elizabeth Stewart

“There are other co-working spaces where people can office in flexible environments, but nothing like this kind of mash-up where it’s really about more of a membership community of people.”

Nestled in the heart of the Arts District in Los Angeles, Elizabeth Stewart works to “connect, empower, and provide resources for Los Angeles entrepreneurs,” according to Forbes.com.

Stewart’s membership club, The Hub LA, gives entrepreneurs a space to work and connect, and an environment to network and inspire one another. Hub LA also provides events and programs for entrepreneurs to succeed.

Stewart has a background in environmental and social sustainability, and has used that knowledge to focus Hub LA on catering to “Impact Professionals.” According to Hub LA’s site, these individuals are “social entrepreneurs, investors, intrapreneurs, policy makers, artists, activists, students, scientists, technologists, and educators – individuals using their work to create positive social or environmental impact.” Stewart believes that Hub LA can create a “sustainable urban infrastructure” that is “suited to tackle the global problems faced today.”

Even though this isn’t the most recent lip stain to hit shelves, it’s the first one that’s really impressed. Although other reviews online have stated that the stain isn’t “mind-blowingly long lasting,” we have to disagree. This stain lasted through an hour-long sweaty gym sesh, grocery shopping, and a dinner out- all without re-application.

The trick is to prep your lips so the stain sets. Follow our steps to prep and then pucker up!

Step 1A. Use an easy homemade sugar scrub with ingredients from your kitchen to buffer your lips. 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and 1 teaspoon olive oil is all you need. Rub it on your lips in a circular motion for about a minute and rinse.

Step 1B. No sugar or oil? No problem. Use your toothbrush and water and use the same circular motion to buff your lips. Just be careful to be gentle!

Step 2. Now your lips are a perfect smooth surface to apply the stain! Apply the stain by using the thin tip to outline your lips, and then fill in with the chubbier lower part of the stain. Wait about 2 minutes.

Step 3. Repeat Step 2 to really bring out the pigment and cover the entire surface. The color will pop! Wait about 2 minutes

Step 4. MOISTURIZE. The one drawback about any stain is that since they’re water-based, they can whisk moisture from your lips. After the color sets, swipe on some lip balm, Chapstick, or even Vaseline. This layer of moisture and protection will keep your lips looking gorg.

Then pucker up! Xoxo xxxx

ShowStoppers Weekly: A Fairy Tale Continues!

Let’s admit it: Kate Middleton is living out all of our dreams. Her true love, a Prince, came to sweep her off her feet, and now she lives the royal life. Thus, we love her. We love her style, her sister, and we loved watching her spectacular wedding.

Just this weekend, Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge Kate celebrated their “paper” wedding anniversary (in the U.K. the paper anniversary is the second one).

Before meeting up with her dear William, Kate swung by the Naomi House Children’s Hospice in Hampshire and received flowers from a fan, Sally Evans, an 8-year-old girl who suffers from spinal muscular atrophy. Evans wished the Duchess a happy wedding anniversary.

After meeting up, the couple had a brilliant time touring the Harry Potter exhibit at Warner Bros., and Us Weekly reported that they further celebrated with a romantic dinner.

Congrats to the royal couple!

Canadian-based apparel company Grand National Apparel announced their collaborative philanthropic efforts with Matthew McConaughey on Wednesday.

McConaughey launched a line titled “JKL” that is the namesake of his nonprofit, Just Keep Livin. A portion of sales from the men’s activewear line will go to Just Keep Living, which “implements after-school fitness and wellness programs in inner-city high schools” according to Look to the Stars.

“Through the sales of our apparel, a very important organization, the ‘just keep livin’ Foundation will benefit in their most important work,” said Jeff Otis, President and CEO of Grand National Apparel.

McConaughey said that the launch of the new line is not only an opportunity to help, but he also enjoys it. “I’m starting this brand because it accents a positive. It spreads a good word, creates incentive, puts a smile on my face and it’s fun.”

Womentrepreneur Wednesday: Yael Cohen

“We need to learn how to discuss [cancer] authentically and support each other in a significant way.”

Yael Cohen will stop at nothing to spread awareness about early detection to fight cancer. This 26 year old began her nonprofit FCancer in 2009 after her mother was diagnosed. Since then, her organization has 66,000 Facebook followers and Cohen has been a part of tons of events to spread her message: 90% of cancers are curable in stage I.

Cohen has participated in TEDWomen, TEDx Vancouver, and the Clinton Global Initiative, to name a few. FCancer is aimed at Generation Y to encourage people to actively look for cancer as a preventative and life-saving practice.

Cohen, also a contributor for the Huffington Post, explained that she wanted to give her community the tools for health that she believed were lacking: “improving communication, simplifying nutrition and understanding early detection of cancer.”

Cohen built a readable website and uses social media to promote awareness. FCancer recently held an event at Coachella to spread the word. Cohen is working hard to spread the word with “social currency.” To find out how to help, click here.

If you’re about to go lighter for the warmer months, or you’re already a natural blonde (lucky you!), you need to keep your locks shiny, soft, and bright. Blonde is second to red in the high-maintenance category as far as color goes. Blonde hues have to watch out for brassiness, and blonde hair color is the most affected by sun, chlorine, and washing. The best way to combat that metallic, harsh, unnatural color and heal strands from UV exposure is with a brightening shampoo.

I’ve tried dozens of blonde shampoos, and they’re all effective in their own ways. Read along and see which is best for you!

#1. TIGI’s Dumb Blonde

I’ve used this for about five years, and it’s always been a solid choice. The purple tint cuts brassiness and the thick formula is extremely moisturizing. To get the full effects, you have to leave the conditioner in for at least 5 minutes, though, and some of us don’t even have 5 minutes to spare!

#2. John Frieda’s Sheer Blonde

This shampoo has great lather, but I wish the smell was more fruity. This is the best if you’re on a budget, but for thick hair it’s not moisturizing enough to fight damage.

#3. Alterna’s Brightening Blonde

BEST SCENT! This product has by far the best smell in the blonde shampoo category, and it is also purple to cut the metallic color. This product leaves hair super shiny, but for damaged hair it is less effective to help split ends.

#4. Jhirmack’s Silver Brightening

When I first saw this product, I thought it was exclusively for gray hair, but after reading the Yahoo! blog post about it, turns out this fabulous shampoo is for blondes, too! The best part of this one is the thickness. It won’t leave a film and really cleans your hair, but the thickness of the product is helpful for damaged hair, especially after using bleach or a long day in the sun. The purple in this one is dark, so it’s especially effective in neutralizing brassy colors and brightening.

Let us know which one you prefer or if we missed a fantastic product, and be sure to take care of your strands in the warmer weather. Happy coloring!

ShowStoppers Weekly: Coachella Celeb Style!

Although there were no holograms to be found this year at Coachella, there was plenty of style and plenty of talent. Celebs were rocking hippie-chic, laid-back grunge, and cutoffs galore.

The weather for the enormously popular music festival was record-breaking highs and a sandstorm, and supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio posed with a bright Popsicle and equally bright shorts, heating up Indio, CA even more.

Who wears short shorts? “Hot Mama” Hilary Duff sported some denim and topped her outfit off with a wide-brimmed hat.

Lindsay Lohan also rocked denim, but this red-headed star went with black and accessorized with a casual scarf and black booties.

Katy Perry and Spring Breakers star Ashley Benson buddied-up to pose on the 1st weekend. Perry was decked out in color, with bright nails to match.

Our ShowStopper of the Week Giuliana Rancic has been open and honest about her breast cancer experience, and that has brought hope to many women. Giuliana and her husband Bill Rancic shared the incredibly touching story with Glamour last month about their journey. After a lumpectomy, Giuliana describes hearing shocking news:

“[T]he next day my doctor said, “We have great news in one breast and bad news in the other. You need to start thinking about a mastectomy.” That had been the furthest thing from my mind…I wanted to yell from a rooftop and cry and scream.

Bill was the one who said, “Calm down”—and he got out a legal pad. I’m like, “Bill, this isn’t one of your business deals.” He goes, “We’ve got to make a list and figure out the pros and cons of a lumpectomy with radiation and anti-estrogen therapy, and the pros and cons of a mastectomy. Let’s figure this out.”

Bill adds, “We could either get busy living or get busy dying.”

The couple decided to go ahead with the mastectomy, Guiliana said.

“So we sat in the backyard—I’ll never forget it—on a blanket, and I was crying. We went through the lists and we were able to see, wow, the list of pros for mastectomy really outweighed the cons.”

The Rancics have since been involved in breast cancer awareness, and Monday announced that they are partnering with Meridian Health for their Paint the Town Pink kick-off. Paint the Town Pink is a month-long event to raise awareness of the importance of an annual mammogram.

The kick-off, titled, “Little Things: An Evening with Giuliana and Bill Rancic” is scheduled at the Algonquin Arts Theatre in Manasquan for May 4th. The couple will share their story and guests will have the chance to meet them.

For more information on Paint the Town Pink and how to attend the event, visit Paint the Town Pink’s website.
